Hydrogen method (snifting test)

Test medium: Forming gas (5% Hydrogen (H2) / 95% Nitrogen (N2))

Detectable leakage rates: >0.0001 cc/min

Testing method:
Test specimen is pressurized. The test gas flowing out through leakages is detected by a usually hand-directed probe.

Example: Hydrogen Method

Advantages:

  • cost efficient method for leakage localization
  • simple operation
  • problem-free filling of test  specimen due to the physical characteristics of hydrogen
  • cost efficient trace gas

Drawbacks:

  • disturbances due to the natural occurrence of hydrogen in the atmosphere
  • often not suited for testing plastic parts due to high permeation of hydrogen
  • manual operation and operator-dependent evaluation
  • quantitative leakage rate determination difficult
