Differential pressure method

Test medium: Pressurized air or nitrogen resp. vacuum
Detectable leakage rates: Depending on volume and pressure >0.1 cc/min

Method: Test piece and a sealed reference volume are pressurized/evacuated. Pressure difference between test piece and reference volume caused by leakages is measured and evaluated.

Example: Leakage testing system INTEGRA

Advantages:

  • measurement resolution is independent of test pressure and therefore usually much better than with the relative pressure method

Drawbacks:

  • sensor equipment is slightly more expensive than for relative pressure method
  • thermal and elastic changes on the test  specimen influence the measurement result
